Transmission oils are designed for use in friction units of transmission units of cars and trucks, buses, tractors, diesel locomotives, road-building and other machines, as well as in various gear reducers and worm gears of industrial equipment. Transmission oil oils, as a rule, are base oils (mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic), alloyed with various functional additives.
Transmission oils work in the modes of high speeds of sliding, pressure and a wide range of temperatures. Their starting properties and long working capacity should be ensured in the temperature range from -60 ° C to + 150 ° C. Therefore, they have quite stringent requirements for such parameters as lubricity, thermooxidation stability, anticorrosive and protective properties, resistance to foaming and good viscosity-temperature characteristics.
The variety of produced transmission oils for various techniques has necessitated the development and use of oil classifications that allow the correct choice of the grade of oil for a given transmission design.
